The Irish Composers' Collective presents

Izumi Kimura (piano)

Nick Roth (sax)

Kevin Barry Room, National Concert Hall
October 18th, 8.30pm

ICC concert regular Izumi Kimura will be joined by virtuosic Nick Roth for a concert of new works for piano and sax. Both known nationally and internationally as musicians that cross the boundaries between jazz and classical, this is a pairing that will undoubtedly yield moments of virtuosity, and a performance of musical and technical brilliance.

Nick Roth is a saxophonist, composer, producer and educator. His work explores the liberation of improvisation from composition, the impact of natural form on technology and the contemporary interpretation of traditional music. Nick has performed with and composed for some of the world's leading contemporary artists from across a wide spectrum of musical disciplines. He is the artistic director of the Yurodny Ensemble, artistic co-director of the Sefiroth Ensemble and a founding member of the Water Project. He also performs regularly with Matthew Jacobson’s ReDiviDeR and Francesco Turrisi’s Tarab. Nick is a director at Diatribe Records, Ireland’s leading independent record label for new music. He currently lectures in the School of Music at University College Cork (UCC). His compositions are published by the Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin.

Japan-born but Irish resident, Izumi Kimura is a highly acclaimed practitioner or contemporary piano music. Izumi has performed extensively throughout Ireland as a solo, orchestral and chamber musician, and she has numerous broadcasts on RTÉ Lyric FM, RTÉ One and others. She has worked with some of the leading performers and ensembles from both classical and jazz, including the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Crash Ensemble, Benjamin Dwyer, and Métier among many others. She has performed at many festivals in Ireland and abroad, including RTÉ Living Music Festival, Boyle Arts Festival, Dublin Dance Festival, Dublin Fringe Festival, Ghent Street Festival of New Music, and Music 21's 'Brazil Now'. 'Artes Da Irlanda, Hoje!' in Sao Paolo. She has given many premieres of works by Irish and international composers, including a number of pieces that were written especially for her. Her solo piano album of Japanese and Irish music 'Asymmetry' has been chosen by broadcaster Karishmeh Felfeli "one of the most original creative and stimulating recording of 2010 to be heard on an Irish label, an absolute revelation".

Premiere of Still Life IV: Undercurrents at Kirkos Ensemble Launch Concert

Kirkos Ensemble is a dynamic new contemporary-music ensemble founded by students of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Kirkos is generously supported by the RIAM, but is run entirely (both artistically and administratively) by students, making it the RIAM’s only student-run ensemble.

Dublin is lucky enough to possess a new-music scene which punches well above its weight internationally, but what is missing here is the opportunity for young people to be involved in the music of today. Kirkos Ensemble has a mission to promote the performance of contemporary music by the country’s best young performers, and to provide a platform for young composers to have their works performed well. What makes Kirkos unique is our access to the RIAM’s pool of Ireland’s top emerging performers.

Kirkos Ensemble’s launch concert will be on 17th April at 8pm in St Ann's Church, Dawson Street. They will be performing works by students, teachers and alumni of the RIAM. Admission will be free and the concert will include seven world premieres, an Irish premiere and prize-winning composers and performers in a programme showcasing the huge variety in the output of the RIAM's composers.

Programme:

Kevin O’Connell - Where Should this Music Be
Emma O’Halloran - Truth and Beauty
Edgar Grunewald - After Dark
Robert Coleman - Still Life IV
Fergal Mulloy - The Invading Sun

Bill McGrath - Prelude and Fugue
Nori Krupp - Haunted Tracks
Breffni O’Byrne - Stiallach
Sebastian Adams - Work for Quintet

works will be interspersed with field recordings by Jonathan Nangle
